History
Your Lie in April was originally a manga written and illustrated by Naoshi Arakawa. The manga was serialized in Monthly Shonen Jump started in April 2011 and ended in May 2015. An anime adaptation was released in October 2019which ended in March 2015. The anime had a total of 22 episodes.
Plot
The series introduces Kousei Arima, a very talented pianist. However, after he lost his mother, he developed a strange condition; he couldn’t hear the sound of himself playing the piano. That resulted in him avoiding the piano altogether.
Two years have passed since that incident. Kousei Arima still doesn’t want to play the piano. He has two friends, Tsubaki Sawabe and Ryouta Watari. He spends his time with the two of them. One day, Kousei comes across a beautiful girl named Kaori Miyazuno, who was a violinist. She changes his life entirely and urges him to play the piano again. However, this color that she added to Kousei’s life didn’t stay for long.
Characters
1. Kousei Arima
Kousei Arima is the main male protagonist of the series. He’s a calm and composed boy who rarely express what he’s feeling or thinking. He usually spends his time alone. But he also loves spending time with his three friends, including Tsubaki, Ryouta, and Kaori.
As a piano prodigy, he naturally attracts a lot of rivals. However, he’s unable to spot them and is oblivious to most things going on around him. He also had no idea that Tsubaki was interested in him, even though they had been childhood friends.
Kousei is a pessimist. He constantly beats himself up and is mostly lost in his own thoughts. That’s why he looks up to Kaori, who’s just a little ball of sunshine. He wants to become just like Kaori, free and happy. Kousei is also very kind and is always there for his friends. His friends admire him for that as well.
2. Kaori Miyazono
Kaori Miyazono is the main female protagonist of the series. She’s a very talented violinist and loves playing it. She’s extremely cheerful and energetic. Her smile is contagious and lifts the moods of everyone around her. Kaori is very self dependent. She can’t depend on others for anything.
Kaori doesn’t follow the rules; she’s free spirited. That’s what Kousei loves about her. She doesn’t let anything hold her back or come between her and her violin. Just like Kousei, Kaori is also very kind and empathetic. She helped Kousei overcome the memory of his mother dying. She literally gave him another life, a life full of colors.
Kaori is sometimes very quick to get angry. She often misunderstands Kousei’s intentions when he stares at her for long periods of time. All in all, Kaori is the sweetest person ever and a literal ball of sunshine and energy.
3. Tsubaki Sawabe
Tsubaki Sawabe is the childhood friend of Kousei Arima. She cares greatly for Kousei, especially because she knows his history. She’s also an extroverted individual. She has a lot of female friends as well. She herself is not very girlythough.
Tsubaki also gets angry easily. She takes care of Kousei just like a mother and makes herself available to him at all times. Tsubaki had a crush on Kousei as well, but Kousei was oblivious. She can’t bring herself to confess her feelings to Kousei. She thinks she will ruin their friendship, which she’s right about. She gets jealous easily and is very possessive of Kousei (naturally).
4. Ryota Watari
Ryota is also a friend of Kousei Arima. He’s a cheerful and outgoing guy who has a thing for cute girls. He seems to be a playboy who falls for every girl he finds cute.
He seems carefree most of the time, but he does care for his friends. He likes Kaori and wants to go out with her, but when he finds out about Kousei’s feelings for Kaori, he fully supports him.
5. Hiroko Seto
Hiroko Seto is a pianist and the mentor of Kousei Arima. She’s a very optimistic and cheerful person. She cares greatly for Kousei and supports him playing piano again. Sometimes, she does feel guilty for pursuing his mother as she wanted Kousei to play piano which left him lonely. But she’s always there for him.
6. Emi Igawa
Emi Igawa is a pianist and is Kousei’s competitor. She rarely wears a smile on her face and is very unapproachable. She also seems to be very cold. However, her style of playing the piano is full of emotions. She’s calm on the surface but does have some temperamental issues.
Emi is highly competitive and wants to beat everyone and make her way to the top. However, she slowly opens up to Kousei just before the last performance.
7. Takeshi Aiza
Takeshi Aiza is a pianist who competes against Kousei and Amy. He openly admits his hatred towards Kousei. He appears to be cocky and is confident about his piano playing skills. Takeshi actually admires Kousei and looks up to him. He was highly disappointed when Kousei didn’t do well at playing the piano.
